For that to work, Office has to be a daily part of the modern smartphone users’ productivity cycle. The company is currently executing a strategic shift from selling standalone apps, to selling Office as a service to both consumers and businesses. The two purchases indicate that Microsoft is investing heavily in the mobile productivity space in ways that transcend its traditional set of Office apps. That acquisition ended up becoming a part of its most recent Outlook for Android and iOS apps, launched just last week. That’s similar to what it did with Acompli, which Microsoft acquired for $200 million. We’ve heard Microsoft will keep the Sunrise apps alive as stand-alone products, while using some of the startup’s technology for its own future products.

Microsoft made waves when it released a touch-friendly version of Office for Apple iOS, for example, before it did so for its own Windows 10 platform. The purchase furthers Microsoft’s push into supporting the platforms of rival technology firms. That cross-device and cross-platform support has helped it gain significant traction among users. Users can access their calendars from Google, iCloud, and Microsoft Exchange, as well as connecting to a wide range of other third-party apps. It’s available on the iPhone, iPad, Android devices, and on the Mac App Store, as well as offering a web client. Sunrise has a suite of calendar products for mobile and desktop users that connects with and consolidates calendars from different providers. I'm told that the existing apps will get a minor UI update later this year to bring them in-line with other UI updates going on with Windows 10's big Sun Valley update, but the apps themselves will eventually be replaced by Monarch. The Mail & Calendar apps on Windows 10 are in maintenance mode between now and when the Monarch client is ready to replace them. Of course, that won't provide you with all the integrations Microsoft has planned for the Monarch client, but it does give a general idea of the kind of experiences you can expect to have when using it.

Microsoft also wants to replace the legacy Win32 Outlook client, but that is a goal which appears to be much further out and will be a gradual process as the legacy client is a mammoth that is not easily replaced. Microsoft will begin to preview its new Monarch client towards the end of this year, with plans to replace the Mail & Calendar apps on Windows 10 sometime in 2022.
